I've had quite the hiatus from blogging (thankfully not from running!). Let me explain--in the 7 months since my last post, I've been growing a human (that's right, I'm *very* pregnant!) and bought + moved into my first house.
Back in May, when I was 20.5 weeks/about 5 months pregnant, I ran a Mother's Day 10K. The race literally went by my new home, and the start was only about a mile from it. So, I played it by ear, and decided that--in spite of the rainy forecast--I really wanted to do it. I thought it'd be a cool experience to run a race pregnant, a 10k is well within my comfort zone, and the Mother's Day theme seemed to be quite appropriate.
Quite surprisingly, I ended up being the fourth woman to finish the race (first in my age group) and averaged 7:23/mile...all this at about 5 months pregnant! Needless to say I shocked myself. My only goals were 1) to finish--after all, this would be a "PPR" aka pregnant personal record no matter what--and 2) to not have to pee during the race. :) I accomplished both, and then some!
Personal achievement aside, I thought it was a fun, well-run race. It was put on by Lightfoot Runners, a local staple, so I knew I could expect a low-key and enjoyable time. The start/finish was at Calf Pasture Beach in East Norwalk, as is often the case, and we ran through downtown SoNo and into Oyster Shell Park before turning around.
I felt the route itself was solid, but the bridge from SoNo to East Norwalk was a bit dangerous given its construction (since finished) and slippery conditions. Also, the Oyster Shell Park terrain was uneven, but I certainly was more than happy to slow down for those parts in an abundance of caution for the baby on board. So, one should expect the miles with Oyster Shell park (and the bridge in slippery conditions) to be the slowest.
Fast forward to now, 11 weeks/about 2 months later, I certainly am not running as speedily at 7 months pregnant but I'm just happy to be out there at all! I knock on wood every day and hope this endurance will serve me well when the big day comes.
